After taking EDGE T.J. Parker early on in the second round, the Buffalo Bills traded back up into the second round at No. 62 with the Denver Broncos, sending picks No. 66 and No. 182 and the Bills selected Ohio State cornerback Davison Igbinosun. The Bills didn’t need to draft a starting corner, but they did need some depth.

Buffalo already has Christian Benford, Maxwell Hairston, and Dee Alford as their main starting corners. After those three though, the depth is very limited. Buffalo needed to add some depth to fill out the room. However, going this early is a little bit of a surprise. Then again, Igbinosun provides great size at 6-foot-2 and having him in the room with veterans to learn from should benefit him.

Igbinosun has a ton of playing experience the last four seasons with both Ohio State and Ole Miss. In his four year college career, Igbinosun racked up 192 total tackles, 25 pass deflections, and 4 interceptions. He is a press coverage corner who is not afraid to be physical against receivers.

Bills bring in Davison Igbinosun for extra depth in secondary

Buffalo trading up for Igbinosun is a bit of a surprise considering that the Bills only need depth, and not a starter in the secondary. Typically, players selected in Rounds 1-3 are your start level players. However, getting a player like Igbinosun in the second is head-scratching. There were other needs for the Bills to address, but cornerback wasn’t one of them.

The depth at corner gets a little bit deeper with Igbinosun and who knows, maybe the Bills will get themselves a steal with his physicality that he has. He is not afraid to hit and he has played in some big games with the Buckeyes, so the lights are never too bright for him.

This pick isn’t the worst, but the Bills could have gone in the wide receiver route instead. There is a bigger need to add there as they still need someone to fill out that room and possibly play opposite of D.J. Moore. Instead. The Bills will now have to see where Igbinosun will fit into Jim Leonhard’s defense.

It’s very hard to imagine him starting from Day 1 and quite frankly, if Benford and Hairston are able to rise as a top corner duo, then the Igbinosun pick might be looked at as a bust simply because it was in the second round. Only time will tell, but it is understandable why fans may be frustrated with this pick.
