One of the biggest shocks of the 2025 offseason last year was seeing the Seattle Seahawks opting to trade DK Metcalf to the Pittsburgh Steelers, where he would eventually get a 4-year, $132 million deal from Pittsburgh. With the Bills having a huge need at wide receiver, fans would have liked to have seen the Bills acquire Metcalf. Instead, he joined the AFC North.
Now, Metcalf's future in Pittsburgh may not be as long-term as fans may have thought.
Dan Graziano and Ben Solak from ESPN listed Metcalf as a Top-15 trade candidate for this offseason and the Bills are listed as a potential landing spot for Metcalf. The Commanders and Patriots were also listed as potential team fits.
"When he signed his deal last spring, Metcalf's $25 million in 2026 salary was fully guaranteed. But his two-game suspension at the end of the season for an in-game altercation with a fan voided that guarantee and could in turn make Metcalf easier to trade, if the Steelers are so inclined." said Graziano.
Bills listed as potential landing spot for DK Metcalf (but it's highly doubtful)
The Steelers acquired Metcalf and then ultimately shipped out George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys and right now, the Steelers don’t have another solid receiving option outside of Metcalf. In his first year in Pittsburgh, Metcalf had a career-low in receiving yards (850) to go with 6 touchdowns. He also only had two games of over 100+ yards.
While sending Metcalf away wouldn’t be the worst idea from a financial perspective, it’s extremely hard to trade a receiver in the middle of his prime, especially since he had just over 1,100+ yards two seasons ago in 2023 with the Seahawks.
I find it really hard to imagine that the Bills would somehow acquire Metcalf, but you never know what could happen in the NFL. We see wild things happen all the time. At the same time, I don’t see the Steelers being one-and-done with Metcalf despite Mike McCarthy coming in as the new head coach.
Buffalo definitely needs to do whatever it takes to acquire a true No. 1 target for Josh Allen. The combo of Allen and Metcalf would do some heavy damage in the AFC East, but it’s very hard to imagine the Steelers trading Metcalf especially since they don’t have another great option at WR, and currently don’t have a solidified plan at quarterback.
