There will be no Victory Monday for the Buffalo Bills as they suffered their first loss of the season at the hands of the New England Patriots. It’s not just Buffalo’s first loss of the season, but it’s their first loss in the new Highmark Stadium. It’s the fact that it was the Patriots were the ones to do it that leaves a major sting.
If there is one takeaway from this loss, it’s that the Bills’ defense still has major issues to take care of. Defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard has a lot to clean up heading into Week 5. However, he’s not the one that is on the field not making the plays either.
Bills' secondary fell apart against Drake Maye, Patriots offense
Overall, Buffalo's defense let New England gain over 400 total yards, and they also gained 26 first downs (compared to 19 first downs by Buffalo's offense). In terms of the passing attack, Maye had his way against Buffalo with 269 yards and 3 touchdowns. His one interception he had wasn't truly his fault as it bounced off of Romeo Doubs hand and it went straight into Dee Alford's hands.
Coming into Week 4, Maye looked like a bottom-tier quarterback. He then turned it around and completely ripped apart the Bills' defense. One cornerback that Maye was embarrassing was Maxwell Hairston, who had one of his worst games as a member of the Bills.
His performance was so bad, that it should motivate the Bills to call a familiar face in Tre'Davious White, who is still a free agent.
Bills need to bring in Tre'Davious White after Week 4 loss against Patriots
There is no reason why this secondary, who didn't have to face A.J. Brown, and then eventually not have to play Mack Hollins (who left the game with an injury), should be allowing Maye and the New England passing attack to put them on their heels like they did.
Christian Benford not playing due to a toe injury definitely hurt the Bills. There's no denying it. Instead of Hairston taking advantage of the opportunity to show what he's all about, he let Romeo Doubs look like a true No. 1 receiver when we all know he isn't.
Brandon Beane should be looking to bring back Tre'Davious White and add the cornerback depth that they need. Benford was already out, and then the Bills had lost Te'Cory Couch and Dee Alford to injuries throughout the game. That's where having someone like White would have kept some kind of stability in the secondary.
After this bad performance by the Bills' secondary, they could use any help that they can get. Bringing back White who knows Buffalo, and knows what the expectations are is the best solution possible.
