The NFL trade deadline is less than two weeks away and the Buffalo Bills cannot afford to go two consecutive years without making a move to improve the team.
At last year’s deadline, the Bills failed to upgrade the wide receiver room which made a lot of fans angry at the front office. Heck, they didn’t make a single trade at all which was even worse.
Now with the Bills having a major problem in the secondary and giving up 285 passing yards per game, Brandon Beane faces a ton of pressure to make things right and give this defense a chance to compete down the stretch.
Bills' secondary issues will cost them big if not addressed
Even though the Bills are at 5-1, their wins have come in a fashion where fans had to worry about losing in the 4th quarter. The games are too close, and a major reason why is because of the secondary allowing offenses to throw the ball with no problem down the field.
Not to mention, C.J. Gardner-Johnson is suspended for Week 8 against the Baltimore Ravens so the secondary is down some help. However, his play has not been great at all. In addition, Cole Bishop hasn't taken the big step that fans were expecting when Jim Leonhard took over as the defensive coordinator.
If Buffalo wants to bring any kind of stability to this unit, there is a player down in Tennessee that could help them out as Kristopher Knox from Bleacher Report has pointed out.
Bills can solve secondary issues with AFC South safety
Knox listed Tennessee Titans safety Amani Hooker as a potential option for the Bills, with the potential trade value being a 2027 4th-round pick:
"The Titans should be interested in putting more pieces around second-year quarterback Cam Ward, and they may want to trade away some defensive pieces before November 10 to help do it. Safety Amani Hooker would be a prime candidate in that scenario." Knox wrote.
"Hooker has been a solid starter for the Titans and is still only 28 years old. He's allowed an opposing passer rating of just 81.2 in coverage this season, and he would undoubtedly draw interest from teams in need of secondary help." Knox added.
Hooker is in his 8th season as a member of the Titans and has been an extremely valuable player on an overlooked Titans team. He has 461 total tackles and 14 career interceptions (2 this season already which is tied for 7th-best). Oh, he also has 42 pass deflections in his career so he has the ability to chase down the ball and swat it away to avoid a big play from happening.
With the Titans falling to 1-6 on the season, it would make sense for them to be sellers and gain extra draft capital for the future. Buffalo needs to seriously consider pursuing a trade to gain a player like Hooker to help boost the backend of their defense.
