When you think of the Buffalo Bills, Josh Allen usually comes to mind first considering the superstar quarterback that he is. He isn’t just the best player on the roster, he is arguably the best player in the entire league. I would make the case that the only better overall player than Allen is edge rusher Myles Garrett of the Los Angeles Rams.
Then you have players like James Cook, who is one of the best backs in the league. In addition, guys like DJ Moore, Dion Dawkins, and Christian Benford are also some of the top players that the Bills have. Bills Mafia definitely knows the value that the roster players have, but the rest of the league may not.
Due to guys like Allen and Cook being known as some of the best in the league, the rest of the roster tends to get overlooked which is unfortunate.
Bills have quality players that get overlooked across the NFL
The only superstar that is on the roster is Allen, followed by a handful of extremely great players, and then the rest are up for debate depending on who you talk with. Focusing on the defense, the Bills revamped that unit this past offseason since it has been the main liability for the team the last few seasons.
One area that featured some additions was the safety room that brought in guys like C.J. Gardner-Johnson, Geno Stone, and Jalon Kilgore. Not to mention, the Bills already have Cole Bishop who took a great step forward in the middle of last season to gain the trust of Bills fans.
When it comes to Bishop specifically, from Week 8 and on, he shined in total tackles, pass defended, and he had a couple of hard tackles that set the tone throughout the game. However, his emergence was completely ignored in a safety power rankings list by Bradley Locker of Pro Football Focus (PFF), who didn't list one Bills safety in the Top 32 of the list going into the season.
It is extremely disrespectful to not see even one Bills safety on Locker’s list, but that’s okay. Not only is them being overlooked as a great motivation factor, but Jim Leonhard is now the defensive coordinator who was a safety himself back in his playing days.
Jim Leonhard has chance to change Bills' safety room for better
Leonhard was a solid safety throughout his career, and when he got into coaching back at the college level, he has caught the attention of people who watch football on a consistent basis. He has spent the last two seasons with the Denver Broncos who have had the best overall defense during that span.
Leonhard was the pass game coordinator and the Broncos’ pass-defense was one of the best in the game. He was bound to be a defensive coordinator sooner than later, and the Bills were very lucky to get him when they did.
Even though Bishop or any safety that the Bills have on their roster wasn’t listed on Locker’s list, having Leonhard in the building should definitely change the narrative on how the rest of the NFL views them.
