Even with the NFL trade deadline being passed for nearly a month, Brandon Beane is still making moves to try and help this roster for the Buffalo Bills as the final regular season stretch plays out. Last week, the Bills signed Brandin Cooks after his release from the New Orleans Saints. Earlier tonight, the Bills claimed cornerback Darius Slay off of waivers after he was waived by the Pittsburgh Steelers, per Tom Pelissero.

In order to make room for Slay, the Bills released CB Ja’Marcus Ingram. To be honest, this was a bit of a surprising move by the Bills. But who knows, maybe Slay can provide some value to this secondary.

While Slay is set to play the rest of the season with the Bills, it turns out that Buffalo wasn’t the only team that was interested in acquiring Slay.

According to Ian Rapoport, the Philadelphia Eagles had also put in a claim for Slay, but the Bills had the priority and ended up with him.

Slay was with the Eagles from 2020-2024, where he was a three-time Pro Bowler and was part of the Super Bowl team that beat down the Chiefs this past February. He was released by the Eagles in the offseason and had signed a one-year, $10 million deal with the Steelers.

Slay didn’t have the best tenure with the Steelers, which ultimately led to him being waived. With the Bills getting him now for the rest of this season, they get a proven veteran Super Bowl champion who has great experience in zone coverage which is what Buffalo runs.

The good news is that the Bills won’t need him to start, so he could be great depth should an injury pop up. Buffalo already has Christian Benford, Maxwell Hairston, Taron Johnson, and Tre’Davious White as their main corners, so it may be tough for him to get a lot of playing time.

At the same time, he will need time to adjust and because there is a bit of familiarity with the defensive scheme, it may not take as long for him to get to know the defense.
