The Buffalo Bills made their choice for offensive coordinator, and it seems to be a home run. New head coach Joe Brady is only 36, and many wanted a veteran presence behind him as he calls the plays on offense. They found their man, bringing in Pete Carmichael Jr. to help build Brady's vision. In signing him, they may have bought some trust from veteran wide receiver Brandin Cooks.
Brandin Cooks and the Saints connection
Pete Carmichael is a solid pickup, highly regarded around the NFL for his extensive tenure, and Super Bowl title, under then-Saints head coach Sean Payton. Builder of a prolific passing game for Drew Brees, Carmichael was an architect for the success of many. One such player who thrived under him was Brandin Cooks.
From a stunningly efficient rookie season in 2014 to outright stardom in 2015 and 2026, Carmichael brought out the absolute best in Brandin Cooks. Two of the top four seasons of his career came in that Saints offense; It was Cooks' claim to fame.
A potential Pete Carmichael reunion
The Brandin Cooks of that bygone era wasn't satisfied, but the veteran we know today spoke highly of the Bills and his teammates. He was satisfied with his role, and enjoyed the connection with his quarterback. Perhaps the match, with Josh Allen and Joe Brady leading, and Pete Carmichael building an offense, makes for a perfect reunion with Brandin Cooks.
If anything, Buffalo could use an experienced separator on this roster. They will have to rebuild this WR core, loaded with bodies but lacking in talent- Brandin Cooks would be ideal to help take the edge off. With Keon Coleman likely to return, and plenty of room to fight for a spot in training camp, Cooks could carve out a new role for himself by August.
Brandin Cooks market
If he doesn't return to the Bills and reunite with two of his former offensive coordinators, Cooks would hit the open market. He has yet to publicly consider retirement, but there are lots of veteran free agent receivers out there.
If he did come back to the Bills, he could expect a one-year contract offer at roughly $5m, by our projection. Other teams may be willing to give him more years on a contract, but it's highly unlikely that Cooks draws significant interest from very many teams. Whilst he was a good fit for Buffalo, most rosters are actively trying to get younger.
