The Buffalo Bills have seen a lot of movement this offseason. Aside from the coaching staff that saw Joe Brady become head coach and then Jim Leonhard as defensive coordinator, the team made several additions.

They used every avenue to improve, and free agency gave them the chance to sign safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson. He joined on a one-year, $3.5 million deal, which is a low-cost deal for a veteran who has made plays in this league. And during Wednesday's minicamp practice, Gardner-Johnson had his best day.

ESPN's Alaina Getzenberg reported that Gardner-Johnson broke up two consecutive passes thrown by quarterback Josh Allen. After the breakups, he was seen chirping at Allen. He then snagged an interception that Allen threw when making a downfield pass attempt.

"I haven't touched the ball all camp. So, the fact that I touched the ball three times today, in one day, ahhhh yeah, it's going to be a great year."

Gardner-Johnson didn't hold back his excitement and is ready to make an impact in 2026. And if this is a glimpse of the impact he can make in Leonhard's system, the Bills are in for a treat.

C.J. Gardner-Johnson was a standout in Bills practice

With a new system coming into place, the Bills will have a different look. And it's worth mentioning that Taylor Rapp, Cam Lewis, and Jordan Poyer are all gone from Buffalo's safety room. Those guys combined for 1,236 snaps. Meanwhile, Taron Johnson is gone, along with his 678 slot snaps. Gardner-Johnson could take a chunk of that.

It appears that Gardner-Johnson has worn out his welcome recently, playing in four teams over three years. Regardless of that, he has a knack for making plays, with the versatility to play safety and slot corner.

Over his seven-year career, Gardner-Johnson has logged 370 total tackles, 27 tackles for loss, 55 pass deflections, and 20 interceptions. Last season, he joined the Chicago Bears and gave them a spark. In 10 games (seven starts), he had 51 total tackles, four pass breakups, two interceptions, and three sacks.

While he was inconsistent at times in coverage, Gardner-Johnson was moved around Chicago's defense. He had 269 snaps in the box and 390 snaps in the slot. Although we don't know how Leonhard will use him just yet, Gardner-Johnson making plays in practice will only benefit his case.

With Christian Benford locking down one boundary corner job, the battle for the other job is between Maxwell Hairston and Davison Igbinosun. That means the starting slot job is up for grabs, and if Gardner-Johnson continues to make plays as he did on Wednesday, he'll certainly have the inside track to the starting job.

We are two and a half months away from the start of the 2026 season, but seeing Gardner-Johnson's impact in practice shouldn't be overlooked. It could end up being some foreshadowing.
