Despite the Buffalo Bills having an extremely tough time stopping the run last season (giving up 136.2 yards per game), they did very little to fix the middle of the defense this offseason. Even with the switch to a 3-4 defense, the only notable new addition they made on the defensive line was drafting Zane Durant.
With the defensive scheme switch, the Bills added in more outside linebacker help with Bradley Chubb, T.J. Parker, and Mike Danna. They also moved Greg Rousseau from EDGE to OLB as has been proven to be a great run stopper. However, this is still a weakness for the Bills heading into 2026.
With training camp coming here very shortly, it wouldn't hurt the Bills to try and get more help for the defense prior to training camp kicking off. Moe Moton from Bleacher Report recently listed a trade proposal that would give the Bills some quality depth for the defensive line.
Trade proposal has Bills gaining extra DL depth to help with run support
In Moton's proposal, the Bills would trade a 2027 late round pick to the Baltimore Ravens in exchange for defensive lineman John Jenkins.
"In addition to [Deone] Walker's position shift, the Bills should check in on a proven nose tackle. The Ravens hired a new coaching staff, and Jenkins, who's 37, may not be in their short-term plans. The 6'3", 360-pounder has registered at least 39 tackles (three for loss) in three consecutive seasons." said Moton.
After starting off his career with the New Orleans Saints from 2013-2016, Jenkins has been a bit of a journeyman having played with the Seattle Seahawks, Chicago Bears, Miami Dolphins, Las Vegas Raiders, and Baltimore Ravens. From a run-defense point of view, Jenkins is still playing some quality football and could added some extra value that the Bills would be thankful to have.
The main focus is to have Deone Walker move into the nose tackle going into his second season. With him being on the verge of being a superstar after a breakout rookie season, Walker will get the chance to grow his game. However, the Bills need to make sure that the support behind him will be able to help with stopping the run.
Getting someone like Jenkins would greatly benefit their depth and added more of a veteran presence to this defense that is going through a new scheme. Even though it would be rare to see two powerhouses like the Bills and Ravens make a trade with each other, never say never.
