It’s a new week for the Buffalo Bills as they will be getting ready for their second preseason game this Saturday against the Cleveland Browns. The Bills will be heading to Cleveland to keep evaluating their roster and start to really decide who has a legit chance at making the final 53-man roster. After a dominating 29-14 win over the Carolina Panthers, the Bills have good momentum and players should be looking to continue their hard work.
Buffalo's starters looked great in their first two drives, the backups played solid, and overall it was a great and encouraging statement win. Now granted, it was the first game of the preseason and there will be players who made an impact this preseason that won't be on the final 53-man roster. That's just the nature of the business.
Even players who come out of nowhere and shine in the preseason will find themselves on the outside looking in going into Week 1. The Bills have had, and currently have players like that which makes the front office's jobs extremely tough, especially when you know how much talent a player can have.
Bills have 1 player with potential great trade value
If there is one overall position unit that is set for the regular season for the Bills, it’s the running back room. They have James Cook, Ray Davis, and Ty Johnson as their top three and that shouldn’t change whatsoever, as long as all of them stay healthy. That's where someone like Frank Gore Jr., who is the son of legendary running back, Frank Gore, has a massive disadvantage.
Gore Jr. signed with the Bills as an undrafted free agent in 2024, and he managed to have one preseason game against the Carolina Panthers where he rushed for over 100 yards and a touchdown. However, he obviously didn’t make the final 53-man roster.
This past Saturday, once again against the Panthers, he managed to run for 38 yards and a score, finishing second behind Ian Wheeler (41 yards). Gore Jr.'s longest rush was 16 yards, which was second behind Mecole Hardman who had a 27 yard rushing attempt.
Gore Jr. has only been featured on the Bills' active roster during the playoffs last season, where he had just one catch for six yards in Buffalo's 27-24 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars. Considering the fact that the Bills' running back room is all set, it would be wise for the team to consider what Gore Jr.'s trade value would be, especially since Wheeler showed what he could do as a practice squad player.
Bills would be foolish to not explore Frank Gore Jr.'s trade value
Brandon Beane has never been afraid to be in conversations when it comes to improving the team, whether it’s immediately with a player or adding future draft capital. If Wheeler wasn’t in the picture, I would say that it would be best for the Bills to keep Gore Jr. At the same time, there could very well be a RB-needy team that would be willing to give up a late round draft pick for the young back.
Maybe the Bills should keep Gore Jr. until after their second game this coming Saturday in Cleveland, but if Wheeler continues his momentum with the backups and proves that he can be a valuable practice squad player, then I don't know how the Bills don't atleast see what Gore Jr.'s market is for a potential trade.
