The Buffalo Bills held an open practice on Tuesday at their new Highmark Stadium, giving fans another look at their grand new facility. It was a beautiful day, with a nice look at the players showing off their talents on the field as they try to make the 53-man roster.
While all three quarterbacks were on the field taking their snaps, it was clear that the two backup choices fighting for that second spot behind starter Josh Allen weren't showing any real big improvements despite solid showings in Week 1 of the preseason.
Now may be the time to start exploring for the Bills' next backup to sit behind and learn from Allen to become his permanent backup. Let's take a look at some options from other teams' squads that could help the Bills complete their QB room.
Four NFL teams' QBs that could backup Josh Allen
1.) Pittsburgh Steelers
The Steelers have some flexibility in their quarterback room, given the choices currently on their roster. With Aaron Rodgers on his "farewell" tour this year, this leaves an unpredictable future for veteran Mason Rudolph, second-year player Will Howard, and rookie Drew Allar.
Both Rudolph and Howard showed up and performed well against Green Bay in their first preseason game. But bearing in mind that Rudolph is entering his ninth season in the league, could Howard be the odd man out, as he was drafted during Mike Tomlin's farewell tour last year?
The Bills could capitalize on Howard, as he is a young quarterback whose physical stature is similar to Allen's at 6-foot-4, 236 pounds, with a strong arm and decent athleticism for his size. Plus, he is only in his sophomore season, playing on a 5th-round rookie contract.
2.) Tennessee Titans
With Cam Ward locked in as the Titans' starting quarterback under new head coach Robert Saleh and offensive coordinator Brian Daboll, that leaves the former Buffalo Bills backup Mitch Trubisky as the number 2 as he reunites with his former offensive coordinator, Daboll.
That means the player left out here would be former second-round pick Will Levis. Like Pittsburgh's Will Howard, Levis is similar in size to Allen at 6-foot-4, 229 pounds, with elite arm strength and physical mobility. Also, he would be reuniting with his former quarterback coach at Tennessee and the current Bills' quarterbacks coach, Bo Hardegree.
With familiarity with a certain coach and the opportunity to learn from one of the best in the league, this would be ideal for the Bills to pull off, as he is still on his rookie contract.
3.) Indianapolis Colts
Starting quarterback Daniel Jones is still recovering from a torn Achilles, and former Notre Dame standout Riley Leonard is the backup, so that means Anthony Richardson would be the odd man out.
Richardson would be the Bills' last resort because, even with a similar size and skill set to Allen, the 6-foot-4, 244-pound Richardson needs a lot of work on his accuracy and mechanics, particularly in where to place the football.
Also, his injury history is a concern for the Bills, who are trying to keep their Super Bowl window open as long as Allen remains their quarterback. But if Allen is willing to put in a little time, Richardson may need a shift in teams to get his career back on track.
4.) Cleveland Browns
Speaking of quarterbacks, the Bills need to prepare for the Browns this weekend. Why not take one of these options from a team that doesn't look like they want to name a starter for Week 1? Shedeur Sanders will likely start against the Bills after Dehaun Watson started last week against the Chicago Bears.
Behind them are second-year quarterback Dillion Gabriel and rookie Taylen Green, who are competing for the second-and third-string spots behind the Browns' mystery starter, whenever he shall be named. The odd man out might be Gabriel, as Kevin Stefanski's team drafted him. Monken may want to keep Green and see if they can mold him into the Browns' version of Allen.
