The NFL trade deadline is an exciting period of the season because that’s when we see a good amount of trades happening that involve teams that are clearly thinking about the future. One team that has made it clear that they are looking beyond this season is the Indianapolis Colts.

During the day on Tuesday, the Colts made two trades with two of their best players in OL Quenton Nelson and DL DeForest Buckner. ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that the Colts were trading Nelson to the Seattle Seahawks, and then Tom Pelissero from The Ringer and Netflix reported that the Colts struck another deal to send DeForest Buckner back to the San Francisco 49ers, which is where he started his career.

These two trades by the Colts are showing that they are looking beyond the 2026 season, as they are 2-5 on the season and they fired their now-former general manager in Chris Ballard. The Colts are clearly showing that they are willing to make these trades to gain extra draft capital. If that is indeed the case, the Buffalo Bills have an opportunity to fix their safety position on the defense with Cam Bynum.

Colts' rebuild should have Bills calling about S Cam Bynum

In case you haven’t heard, the Bills have a big problem in stopping the pass. They are allowing 285.8 yards through the air and they are down in the secondary for Week 8 as C.J. Gardner-Johnson was suspended for spitting towards a Raiders player in Week 6.

With the Bills being at 5-1, they are a championship team that have a major problem on the backend of the defense. Trading for a player like Bynum would help bring a boost to Jim Leonhard's defense that desperately needs it.

Cam Bynum would bring stability to a weak Bills secondary

It's clear the Colts are looking past the 2026 season and are looking to gain assets for the future. The fact that parted ways with players like Nelson and Buckner shows that no one is off the table. It's a matter of time before we could see players like Jonathan Taylor and Josh Downs being dealt somewhere else.

Bynum hasn't missed a game since his rookie season back when he was with the Minnesota Vikings, and he has been one of the most underrated players that has been overlooked. He has 449 total tackles to go with 13 interceptions in his career.

He is right in the middle of his prime and with the Colts heading towards a rebuild, it would be wise of them to deal Bynum away, and the Bills should be calling to make the defensive improvement that they need.
