Bills might be ignoring re-signing a free agent that makes too much sense

As NFL free agency continues to unfold the Buffalo Bills must consider bringing back one of the franchise’s key veterans.

The Buffalo Bills have entered a new era, with Joe Brady taking over as head coach, but much has remained the same for the team. While the Bills have lost a couple of players this offseason, and made a few additions, the majority of the core is intact. However, there is one staple veteran who isn’t currently under contract to return to Buffalo next season.

That player is Tre'Davious White. The veteran defensive back, who just played his eighth season with the Bills, and ninth overall year in the league, is currently a free agent. White hasn’t found a new home yet, and he shouldn’t have to, because his NFL home, Buffalo, should re-sign him for the 2026 season.

Bills should explore re-signing veteran corner Tre'Davious White

White was drafted by Buffalo in the the first round of the 2017 Draft, and played his first seven years in the league with the Bills. The team ended up releasing him during the 2024 offseason, so he played that year with the Los Angeles Rams and the Baltimore Ravens. After that one year away, White and Buffalo came back to each other, agreeing on a one-year deal.

It wasn’t just a sentimtal return, though, the veteran corner actually started 16 games for the Bills, and made big plays in the postseason. That wasn’t initially the plan, but injuries opened the door for the two-time Pro Bowler to have a bigger role than expected. White, nearly a decade and multiple significant injuries into his career, wasn’t the same player he was in his prime, but he was still a solid contributor.

While Buffalo is ready to completely hand things over to their younger defensive backs, there’s still a role for White on the Bills. The team should explore bringing him back in the role they initially signed him for last offseason: a valuable leader on the defense who can help mentor younger players in the secondary, and also help out when needed.

Leadership is important, and so is depth; Tre'Davious White can provide both for Buffalo in 2026. The Bills and White should be able to reach a deal that keeps one of the franchise’s mainstays of the last decade around for one more season.
