We are just one more day away from the NFL’s legal tampering period opening up and it’s going to be the start of the journey towards the 2026 seasons. Teams and pending free agents can agree to terms tomorrow, and the contracts can be signed this coming Wednesday at 4PM.

There have already been re-signings by teams and their pending free agents, including the Buffalo Bills. Yesterday, the Bills were able to keep center Connor McGovern from hitting the free agent market by signing him to a 4-year extension worth $52 million ($32 million guaranteed).

Buffalo also swung big in a trade to acquire wide receiver D.J. Moore (the trade will become official on Wednesday). Brandon Beane is already doing some work, but he may find himself doing work that maybe he wasn’t expecting to do.

Bills could be in middle of competition for QB Mitch Trubisky in free agency

According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, Bills’ backup quarterback Mitch Trubisky has “garnered interest as a quality No. 2. The Titans, Bills and Jets are among teams on the radar here.

Trubisky has been the backup to Josh Allen the last two seasons, as well as back in 2021 before he joined the Pittsburgh Steelers. In the last two seasons, Trubisky has only played in two games from start to finish, which were in Week 18. Allen took the first snap, and then went off the field to let Trubisky finish out the game.

In Week 18 this past season against the Jets, Trubisky looked like a true caliber-starting quarterback where he had a QB rating of 142.1 and throwing for 259 yards and 4 touchdowns. Now granted, it was against backups and 3rd-string players but he still looked extremely solid.

The backup quarterback position is more important than people may think. Should something happen to the starter, the backup has to be able to come in and command the offense in a similar fashion. Trubisky is obviously not on the same level as Allen, but he knows the offense and he has plenty of starting experience from his days back in Chicago.

With the latest report from Fowler, the Bills could very well be in the market for a backup QB if Trubisky does not end up coming back. While they could easily draft someone like Drew Allar on the third day of the draft, they still need a veteran presence behind Allen. It’s the responsible thing to do in order to help keep this team in a championship window.
