This past week in the NFL was kicked off with the news that star cornerback Jaire Alexander was released by the Green Bay Packers. After the Packers couldn’t get a trade partner who would take Alexander, the ultimate decision was just to part ways with him. Now, Alexander is free to sign wherever he wants to.
After the news broke about Alexander being released, NFL Insider Jordan Schultz revealed that the Bills and Packers were in trade talks about Alexander but the talks fell through which led to the Bills drafted three cornerbacks in the draft, including Maxwell Hairston in the first round.
The Bills were a serious contender to potentially trade for Alexander, there is no reason why they shouldn’t be pursuing him as a free agent now. However, with what the Bills did this offseason to their cornerback room, someone would have to go if Alexander did sign with the Bills.
Pairing of Jaire Alexander and Bills makes too much sense not to happen
Ryan Godbey from NFL Spin Zone recently listed the top five landing spots for Alexander and the Bills are No. 5 on Godbey’s list. Here’s what Godbey said about the possibility of Alexander coming to Buffalo:
"The Buffalo Bills are a great landing spot for Jaire Alexander due to their lack of talent at the corner position. The Bills also run a very friendly scheme for Jaire, running the 8th most zone last season. However, the Bills currently have only $1.6 million of salary cap, meaning they would have to free up space in order to get him onto their roster, thus making it less likely for him to sign there compared to the other teams on this list."Ryan Godbey, NFL Spin Zone
As far as the cap space, Brandon Beane would obviously have to find a way to make it work. However, there are two reasons why Alexander-to-Buffalo would make a lot of sense. First, the Bills were willing to give up potential draft picks to acquire him despite him missing a lot of time the last two seasons due to injuries.
Secondly, the Bills seem to face injuries every year in the secondary every single season so even just adding the depth with Alexander (who could honestly start as the CB2 opposite of Christian Benford), would be extremely beneficial for Buffalo.
