Bills hiring Joe Brady is a calculated move born from other teams’ mistakes

The Buffalo Bills have their next head coach, and it's Joe Brady, who has served as the offensive coordinator for the past few years. Some might have felt that it was an uninspiring hire, given that Brady was already on the staff, and therefore, the fresh start the Bills needed in their coaching staff won't happen now.

Domonique Foxworth argued that the Bills clearly didn't want a reset in their coaching room and wanted to ensure that Brady didn't leave for another job. In fact, he pointed out how other teams have allowed talented coordinators to get snatched up elsewhere and how that's come back to bite them.

"If you're trying to look for a logical reason why [the Bills hired Joe Brady], it's because of Liam Coen. Like that's the reason, honestly," Foxworth said on The Dan Patrick Show on Wednesday. "It's like, you have a good coach on your staff, which the Bucs had, and you let them leave. And it's something that's happened a bunch of times. The Ravens are a good example of that, also. Mike Macdonald was on the staff. You let him leave. He goes to become a head coach and maybe one of the best coaches in the league at Seattle. And then you fire your coach the next year."

Bills make risky head coach call to avoid a nightmare other teams lived

This is exactly why the Bills hired Brady. Clearly, other teams valued Brady and thought he could be a solid head coach and the Bills didn't want him to leave the building. The best way to ensure he didn't was to give him the ultimate promotion, bumping him up from offensive coordinator to head coach.

Brady now remains in Buffalo, and the Bills won't find themselves in a situation like the Buccaneers are with Liam Coen or the Ravens are in with Mike Macdonald. Coen and Macdonald have both proven that they're excellent head coaches, with Coen turning the Jaguars around almost immediately and Macdonald leading the Seahawks to a Super Bowl in just his second year on the job.

The Bucs and Ravens are surely kicking themselves for letting those guys get away, and Baltimore is clearly trying to right their wrong with the Jesse Minter hire, as he has a similar defense to that of Macdonald's. The Bills are trying to make sure they're not the next team to be in this category.

Maybe Brady doesn't pan out, but considering the recent history, it wasn't worth the risk for Buffalo to let another team steal Brady away. Now he's sticking around and hopefully, the move pays off and this is what needed to happen to get the Bills to a Super Bowl.
