I still remember seeing the notification pop up back in 2022 where the Buffalo Bills had agreed to terms to sign Von Miller, who was coming off a Super Bowl championship victory with the Los Angeles Rams. That was the same season where the infamous “13 seconds” happened to the Bills because they couldn’t stop Patrick Mahomes. Signing Miller seemed like the final addition for the Bills to finally win their first Super Bowl.
Clearly, that didn't happen, and the Bills released Miller after three years into his six-year deal deal. His first season started off strong, but then a torn ACL on Thanksgiving was the start of the downfall in his Bills tenure. He had 8 sacks in 2022 before the injury, didn't record a single sack in 2023, and then had 6 sacks in 2024. Miller also didn't play more than 13 games in a season for the Bills.
After being released by the Bills, Miller opted to sign with the Washington Commanders where he showed the NFL that he still has some left in the tank, recording 9 sacks with 26 total tackles. It doesn’t seem like he’s ready to call it a career yet either.
Even though Miller has expressed his desire to return to the Denver Broncos, per Parker Gabriel of the Denver Post, the Bills have a perfect reason to reunite with Miller for the 2026 season. That reason is quite simple; the Bills don't need Miller to be the closer that they brought him in to be in 2022, making it a great fit.
Bills wouldn't need Von Miller to be ultimate closer that he once was
When Buffalo signed Miller in 2022, they viewed him as the guy who could come in the game and close them out in the late stages of the 4th quarter. The Bills had been missing that for so long and while Miller had that reputation throughout his career in Denver, that wasn’t the case for Buffalo.
Now that the Bills are switching to a new scheme on defense under Jim Leonhard, Miller wouldn’t need to come in and be the closer that Buffalo wanted him to be. Instead, while Miller gets the chance to rejoin a championship team that he is familiar with, he would also have the opportunity to just come in and play his game to the best of his ability.
Buffalo signed Bradley Chubb this offseason who should have the chance to become the closer that the defense needs. Miller can be part of a rotation where he comes in and causes chaos for an offense, which is something he did for Washington last season.
Even though the Bills invested heavily into bringing in pass rushers this offseason, signing Miller to add even more competition wouldn’t be a bad idea considering what he showed last season in Washington. Again, he could just come in to be part of the rotation and not be viewed as the closer for this defense which is what could make him very valuable.
