The Buffalo Bills have been chasing their goal of winning their first franchise Super Bowl this entire decade, but heartbreak has happened in every single postseason in some kind of fashion. They’ve lost in each round up to the AFC Championship game since 2020. They have lost in regulation as well as overtime.
Last season's lost in the Divisional Round to the Denver Broncos was the final straw for the Bills in the Sean McDermott era, as he was fired just two days later. Not only did Joe Brady get promoted, but Brandon Beane stayed and got a promotion as the new President of Football Operations.
Bills implement lots of change entering a new era
While Brady has been in the building since 2022, he is an offensive-minded head coach which is something that the Bills haven't had in awhile. The defense (that was under McDermott's control a lot throughout his tenure) is now under the control of Jim Leonhard.
The roster has a good amount of new pieces on both sides of the ball, and fans will be seeing how it all comes together in just six days down in Houston.
1 future outlook beyond 2026 season gives Bills even more pressure for Super Bowl run
Aaron Schatz of ESPN listed the Bills as one of the five teams that look to be all-in for the Super Bowl this season, but Schatz pointed out one factor that puts pressure on Buffalo to finally go all the way:
"The Bills are currently 30th in the league in 2027 cap space, and they're going to have difficulty climbing out of that hole. The only obvious candidate for a restructuring is left tackle Dion Dawkins, 32, so there will need to be cuts." said Schatz.
"As quarterback Josh Allen, 30, approaches his ninth NFL season, the pressure is definitely on him to help Buffalo finally get over the hump. The Bills added reinforcements for him this offseason, including wide receiver DJ Moore and new coach Joe Brady." Schatz added.
Buffalo has had some trouble with the cap space in recent memory, but that hasn't stopped Brandon Beane from working his magic to get out of the red and manage to make some free agency moves. However, it's never an easy process and there have to be difficult decisions that are made.
Schatz also did mention that "No player who played at least 50% of snaps for the Bills last season is still on the roster with a contract that ends after this season." This means that their heavy contributors should still be on the roster after this season, but that doesn't mean that Buffalo won't have to get creative to make sure they are good to go with the salary cap.
If the Bills go through another season without winning a Super Bowl, it will just be another year of disappointment. If that were to happen, then the Bills would have to focus on the offseason and figure out the salary cap, which could lead to some unpopular but necessary decisions.
