The Buffalo Bills are set to finish out the preseason tomorrow night against the Pittsburgh Steelers, and once they finish that game, the coaching staff will have to start making decisions on who will be on the final-53 and who could be playing football somewhere else this season.
During the offseason, teams gain all kinds of talent through free agency, trades, and the NFL Draft to bring in as much competition as they can for when training camp and the preseason come around. The Bills were not shy this past offseason as they didn’t just make coaching changes, but they also made a lot of roster changes (especially on the defense).
With the switch to a 3-4 defense, the Bills needed to add more outside linebackers and they did so by bringing in guys like Bradley Chubb and T.J. Parker, while also moving guys to the position like Greg Rousseau. Another veteran free agent that the Bills signed was OLB Mike Danna, who has spent his entire career with the Kansas City Chiefs.

In the new defense led by Jim Leonhard, there will be a key emphasis on bringing a consistent pass rush that takes pressure off of the secondary. In order to do that, they need a consistent rotation coming from the outside, but at the same time, not everyone that is currently in the room will be on the roster.
The Bills need depth across the roster, and despite the OLB position being an important one, the Bills will need to let some players go, and Kevin Patra from NFL.com recently listed Danna as a Bills player that could be released or traded by the Bills.
"Danna is buried in a deep edge group in Buffalo. Perhaps the Bills keep extra bodies, but hanging on to a middling veteran, who had one sack in 15 games with Kansas City in 2025, at this stage makes little sense." said Patra.

Danna, who is a two-time Super Bowl champion, is more of a true rotational edge rusher who can help bring a little bit of pressure. However, his run-stopping ability is pretty solid which could ultimately help him secure a roster spot.
With one more preseason game left to play, it will be interesting to see if Danna will be playing. There’s no reason why he shouldn’t be. If he is, that means that he still has some proving to do to the coaching staff.
With Danna only being here on a one-year deal, he could very well be one player that faces the tough reality that he could be a cut candidate for the Bills. We will have to wait and see how this plays out because he is a solid player, but he’s not an elite one either.
