Sometimes, NFL fans and media members try to force a story into existence. How sensational would it be if the son of a legendary running back became a star for his father's former team? Even better, what if he fought his way up the depth chart after signing as an undrafted free agent?

In reality, Buffalo Bills running back Frank Gore Jr. hasn't been the hidden gem that fans were expecting. With plenty of time left before the start of the regular season, he's already in danger of being released.

Bills fan favorite running back already in danger of being cut

It's not easy to follow in the footsteps of a potential Hall of Fame father. Frank Gore Sr. is one of the best running backs in NFL history. He spent 16 seasons in the league, including one with the Bills. When his son signed with the team, the stories wrote themselves.

Gore Jr. was an incredibly productive running back in college. In four seasons at Southern Mississippi, he rushed for over 3,500 yards and 24 touchdowns.

Despite his impressive numbers, Gore Jr. wasn't thought of as an elite draft prospect. He doesn't have the breakaway speed of an NFL running back, and he lacks the physicality or elusiveness to make up for it. Gore Jr. went undrafted and signed with the Bills soon after the draft ended.

Gore Jr. showed flashes of effective play in his three preseason appearances, averaging almost five yards per attempt and scoring a touchdown. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough to earn him a spot on Buffalo's final roster. Gore Jr. was waived and landed on the Bills' practice squad.

One year later, he's fighting to make the roster again. But this time, he faces an even bigger challenge. Gore Jr. is hoping to work his way into a crowded group of Bills running backs.

James Cook is set to remain the Bills' starter, and they already have strong depth behind him. Second-year back Ray Davis could step into a bigger role this season, and Ty Johnson has excelled as a third-down back. Buffalo even signed Darrynton Evans in free agency to round out the group.

There's just not room for Gore Jr. to earn a roster spot. He would have to beat out Evans, a much more established back.

Barring a preseason miracle, Gore Jr. is set to fall short of Buffalo's final roster once again.
