For the people that watch this past season’s Super Bowl between the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs, you saw how dominant the Eagles’ defense was upfront and completely wrecked havoc against Patrick Mahomes. In the two Super Bowls that Mahomes and the Chiefs have lost, there has been one common theme; Kansas City’s offensive line was bullied beyond belief.
The Buffalo Bills have been a team in the playoffs that have been knocked out by the Chiefs four of the last five seasons and part of the reason why is because of the lack of production from the defensive line. For some reason, the Bills just can’t force pressure against the Chiefs and that allowed Mahomes to work his magic and absolutely pick apart Buffalo’s defense.
It seems like the Bills have had enough of not getting enough production up front as they have made the defensive line a priority during free agency and in the NFL Draft. According to Thad Brown, the Bills “spent $79 million in guaranteed money and three of their top four draft picks on the DL this offseason.”
The Bills are building up the defensive line more than ever
In free agency, the Bills have signed Larry Ogunjobi, Michael Hoecht, and Joey Bosa while also extending Greg Rousseau to a four-year extension. During the draft, the Bills have traded up for two defensive tackles in T.J. Sanders and Deone Walker. In addition, the Bills also got a steal in third round with edge rusher Landon Jackson. Buffalo is sending a message to the whole league that they are planning on fixing the defensive line to make a Super Bowl run.
Now you have all of these guys to go with Ed Oliver and DaQuan Jones for 2025. Brandon Beane has been gifting draft picks to Bobby Babich in hopes that the Bills don’t always have to be Josh Allen-dependent.
The Bills are so close to finally getting past the Chiefs in the playoffs. With what was seen in the Super Bowl by the Eagles, every team should be trying to take page out of their book and beef up the trenches. That’s exactly what the Bills are trying to do and we’ll see if it can pay for them.
