Bills fans should prepare for Sean McDermott's seat to start warming up as Bills HC

Some fans may agree, some may not.

This might bring in a lot of agreement, or a lot of arguments. It really all depends on how you feel about Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott. However, since 2020, it’s been the same continuous story for the Bills. It’s a great regular season that results in a division title, atleast one playoff win, and then the season comes to an end with a heartbreaking loss (most of the time to the Kansas City Chiefs).

There is no doubt that the Bills made the right hire in McDermott back in 2017. He came in and cleaned up a big mess that Rex Ryan created from 2015-2016. There was no discipline and the Bills had a lot of talent that was never utlized correctly. Coming from Carolina, McDermott was a disciplinarian who was looking to change the culture for the Bills. He did that in year one when he brought the Bills to the playoffs with Tyrod Taylor under center.

McDermott was then blessed in the 2018 NFL draft when the Bills traded up to draft Josh Allen out of Wyoming. He had his franchise quarterback and it was going to be a project for sure. Allen had all of the talent in the world, but he was a reckless player who had a lot of turnovers. Luckily it has worked out for the best with the duo as they have been able to build consistency and a winning culture (for the most part).

At the same time, we are having the same conversation come January time when the Bills get eliminated from the playoffs, mostly by the same team in the Chiefs. Sean McDermott has taken a lot of heat of the years and there have been analysts that have been saying that McDermott might be holding Josh Allen back from reaching a Super Bowl. It sounded ridiculous at one point, but maybe it doesn’t anymore.

Bills fans should embrace idea of Sean McDemott's HC seat warming up

It is extremely hard for an organization to move on from a coach that has brought hope back to the fans. For a long time, the Bills were a mess and it seemed like they couldn’t do anything right. McDermott came in and immediately fixed the problems for Buffalo and has taken over the AFC East without issue.

However, it looks like McDermott may not be able to elevate the Bills to a Super Bowl. The Bills are 0-2 in the conference championship against the Chiefs since Allen was drafted and Buffalo has fallen short against the Chiefs in two other divisional round matchups in 2022 and 2024. Not to mention, the Bills have also been beaten down by the Cincinnati Bengals in 2023 on their own home turf.

It’s become an expectation that the Bills compete to get to the Super Bowl every year. However, McDermott hasn’t been able to deliver that promise to Bills fans. Bills fans deserve to see Josh Allen and the Bills in the Super Bowl. The fact that Allen has played some of his best football in the playoffs and he hasn’t reached the Super Bowl once is unbelievable.

If this trend continues for the Bills, where they get so close but end up falling short, McDermott’s seat should be warming up because if McDermott has hit his ceiling, Buffalo is better off exploring a different route with a new head coach.
