This past Sunday, NFL fans saw the New England Patriots heavily struggle against a strong Seattle Seahawks team where at one point, it surely looked like the Seahawks were on their way to shutting the Patriots out. Buffalo Bills fans took great joy in watching their division rival completely fall apart.
While Bills fans had their laughs towards the Patriots, there was a time where the NFL was laughing at the Bills during the Super Bowl in the 1990s. Buffalo went to four consecutive Super Bowls and didn’t win one. Ironically, they lost to Dallas, Washington, and the NY Giants, all teams in the NFC East.
Had it not been for Scott Norwood kicking it wide right in the Bills’ first Super Bowl against the Giants, the Bills would have atleast one trophy. Instead, the Bills lost four straight Super Bowls and they could very well be the only team in NFL history that ever has that kind of accomplishment.
Bills had some rough Super Bowl performances in early 1990s
Gary Davenport from Bleacher Report put together a list of some of the best Super Bowl teams in NFL history, and Davenport listed two teams that the Bills had to play against.
At No. 6 on Davenport’s list was the 1992 Dallas Cowboys who delivered a 52-10 beatdown of the Bills in the Super Bowl. Dallas was a great team overall and the Bills just simply didn’t stand a chance. Buffalo ended up losing to Dallas in two of their four Super Bowl appearances.
Then at No. 5 on Davenport’s list, it was Washington back in 1991 where this defense completely embarrassed Jim Kelly. In this game, Kelly had 4 interceptions, was sacked 5 times, and he had 3 fumbles. It was an absolute nightmare for Buffalo, who was down 37-10 at one point before scoring two more touchdowns to make the score look somewhat respectable, but it surely wasn’t a close game.
I get it, seeing a division rival completely fall apart on the biggest stage is hilarious. However, Bills fans should not forget that they were once in that position and they still have yet to reach the Super Bowl with Josh Allen.
With a new look Bills led by Joe Brady, Buffalo will be looking to do what Sean McDermott couldn’t do, and that is get to the Super Bowl and bring the Lombardi home to Western New York.
