Brandon Beane and the Buffalo Bills continue to get slammed for their wide receiver situation and the general manager has spoken out about how frustrating that is for him. As of this writing, the Bills will likely roll with Khalil Shakir, Keon Coleman, and Josh Palmer as their starting wide receivers and while no, those aren't scary names by any means, Beane fired back that scary receivers aren't necessary in the league.
While appearing on The Pat McAfee Show, Beane pointed to the New England Patriots as a prime example of a team not needing star talent at wide receiver to win Super Bowls.
"Look at New England. How many great, historic receivers did they have in their Super Bowl teams? But the Patriots, they were good up front, they had a good quarterback, they always had some type of run game," Beane said. "There's 100 different ways you can build it, and we're not against good receivers."
Brandon Beane has a point with recent Patriots remarks
While it's not fun having to think about the Patriots' dominance in the league for 20 years, Beane has a valid point here. Aside from a few outlier years, for the most part, the Patriots didn't have star wideouts during their run. While, sure, Brady had a few dependable weapons like Randy Moss and Rob Gronkowski, he also had guys like Chris Hogan on his offense.
And it never mattered. The Patriots always found ways to win and that's what Beane is hoping the Bills can pull off. Josh Allen is coming off the first MVP award of his career and that's after losing Stefon Diggs the previous offseason. People questioned who Allen was going to throw to without Diggs and what happened instead was that it opened up the offense even more because Allen wasn't pressured to throw the ball to Diggs over and over.
Bills fans won't like the Patriots praise but at the same time, it's hard to argue against the success they had for so long. If Beane thinks this team can pull off a similar feat, Bills fans might let these comments about the team's rival slide... at least for now.
