The Bills have now officially signed safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson to his one-year deal, adding his presence to a defense that should look more aggressive than it ever has. Gardner-Johnson is a player who is not afraid to bring intensity and quite frankly, that is exactly what this Bills defense needs.
While Sean McDermott has put together some solid defensive schemes, the defense was always playing to not lose. Now with Jim Leonhard coming in as the defensive coordinator, this defense will look to not just be aggressive, but play to attack the ball. Fans should be extremely thrilled with this philosophy, and Gardner-Johnson is a great fit for it.
After signing his contract, Gardner-Johnson spoke with the media and when he was asked about teaming up with Cole Bishop on the backend, his response should have Bills fired up for what this defense will bring in 2026.
C.J. Gardner-Johnson's comments about Cole Bishop has Bills fans excited
Per Alex Brasky, Gardner-Johnson said that getting the chance to play with Bishop is "going to be similar to duo with Reed Blakenship but on another level." Gardner-Johnson then said "I think we're going to drive the defense to do what we want to do this year, which is take the ball away and play aggressive over the top."

The Bills signing Gardner-Johnson should make a huge impact on Bishop, who is coming off a strong second-year where he was teammates with Jordan Poyer, who ultimately was mentoring Bishop during the season. Bills fans saw a different version of Bishop as the season went on and now fans are excited to see him keep growing going into 2026.
Now with the addition of Gardner-Johnson, maybe, just maybe Bishop will also be able to learn the intensity factor that Gardner-Johnson will bring. If Bishop is able to implement that into what he has already learned from Poyer, Bishop should easily become a top ten or maybe a top five safety in the league.
In addition to getting Gardner-Johnson as a teammate, Bishop also gets the benefit of learning from Jim Leonhard who was also a safety back in his playing days. Bishop has nearly a perfect setup going into this third season as a pro. Fans are now hoping that Bishop can take another big step forward and become a leader in this defense.
