He may get some playing time on Sunday.

Heading into their meaningless Week 18 matchup against the New England Patriots, the Buffalo Bills have made a roster move that makes a lot of sense. Quarterback Mike White, who was on the practice squad for the whole season, has been signed for to the active roster. In order to make room for White, the Bills have released linebacker Nicholas Morrow, who they brought back a couple weeks ago due to injuries in the linebacker room.

With Josh Allen expected to play for a very short amount of time on Sunday, this move makes a lot of sense to have White as the backup to Mitch Trubisky. However, Sean McDermott did say that not only will White be suited up in Week 18, but they will try to get him in the game, per Maddy Glab. Another great factor about the Bills bringing White up to the active roster is that if they keep him on the roster, he can become the emergency 3rd quarterback should any injuries happen in the quarterback room.

Bills get extra protection at the quarterback position

Mike White was drafted in 2018 by the Dallas Cowboys in the 5th round, but never saw any playing time and last just one season in Dallas before being released prior to the 2019 season. White then landed with the New York Jets in the first month of the 2019 season on the practice squad. After going back forth of being waived and getting signed to the practice squad throughout 2019 and 2020, White finally got some playing in 2021 and 2022 when Zach Wilson was playing poorly.

As a starter, White went 2-5 for the Jets and had 9 touchdowns to 13 interceptions. There’s a reason why he hasn’t been able to be a solid backup in this league.

White left the Jets to sign with the Miami Dolphins in 2023 on a two-year deal and only had six pass attempts for 74 yards and one touchdown. Prior to the start of this season, White was released by the Dolphins and he landed with the Bills on their practice squad.

Bills fans should expect this Sunday to be the Mitch Trubisky show, but they may get White involved a little bit in the second half no matter what is going on in the game. In addition to getting signed to the active roster, Adam Schefter reported that Mike White and the Bills have agreed on a one-year deal that runs through the 2025 season. It looks like there might be a backup quarterback competition for next season.
