A win is a win, and when it comes to the NFL, there are times where it doesn’t matter how you get it. At the same time, you want to try and make it a convincing win. The Buffalo Bills, coming off extra rest from their Week 2 Thursday Night Football win over the Detroit Lions, had a rough start against the Los Angeles Chargers.
This win by the Bills was definitely undeserving, considering the fact that they didn't have a lead until over halfway through the 4th quarter. The Chargers took a 10-0 lead after James Cook had fumbled on the Bills' first play of the game, putting the Bills in a tough position throughout the game. Cook's fumble was one of five turnovers that the Bills had on the day.
While the offense had their struggles after two strong games to open the season, Buffalo's defense was the one that stepped up and helped carry the Bills to a win.
Bills' defense was the difference maker in Week 3 win
Josh Allen had three turnovers, and both Cook and Dalton Kincaid each had a lost fumble which put the defense in a tough position. However, out of the five turnovers that the Bills had, the Chargers only managed to score 10 points off of them (all in the first quarter). If that doesn't say something about Buffalo's defense, I dont' know what does.
The other drives from the Chargers off of the Bills' turnovers resulted in a missed field goal, punt, and interception. Allen had the Bills' final turnover in the 4th quarter, and the Chargers had recovered it in in Buffalo territory, as they were up 13-10.
LA took possession of the ball, and on an attempted pass towards the endzone, Herbert was picked off by C.J. Gardner-Johnson at the goaline and returned it 41 yards to give the ball back to Josh Allen.
After Gardner-Johnson's interception, 13 plays later, the Bills managed to capitalize and get into the endzone to take a 17-13 lead. On LA's next drive, they turned the ball over on downs, and the Bills got into the endzone again to take a two-score lead. Eventually, they closed out the game and are now 3-0.
C.J. Gardner-Johnson made the play that Bills desperately needed
Had it not been for Gardner-Johnson reading the ball perfectly and making the game's biggest play, there is a very good chance the Bills are sitting at 2-1. Instead, the Bills remin unbeaten and they take care of business against a Chargers team that was looking to pull off a major upset.
In addition, Gardner-Johnson's interception was Buffalo's first interception of the season and it was a big one. It was the momentum changer and now has Bills fans celebrating going into Week 4.
