Bills can quietly use the D.J. Moore trade to open up significant cap space

The Buffalo Bills have a new WR1 for Josh Allen after their blockbuster trade with the Chicago Bears for DJ Moore. And Moore coming to town may only be the beginning for what the Bills are going to do to upgrade the roster this offseason.

Even with one of the most expensive receiver rooms in the NFL, the Bills could still add to that position or elsewhere on the roster, and Moore's contract can help them do that.

According to the good folks over at Spotrac, the Bills can still free up an additional $17.7 million with a salary conversion on Moore's contract, lowering his cap hit under $7 million this coming season.

DJ Moore can help the Bills add another $17.7 million in salary cap space

Getting another $17.7 million in salary cap space courtesy of DJ Moore is probably just the beginning. They can save more than $6 million by cutting Curtis Samuel, and they could save over $5.3 million by making Joshua Palmer a post-June 1 cut.

After witnessing what went down last season, everyone knew the Bills were going to be aggressive in upgrading the wide receiver room this offseason, and this is the first step toward doing that.

The Bills have also been rumored to be interested in the likes of free agents Alec Pierce and Mike Evans, and I'm not sure the acquisition of a player like DJ Moore changes that. We'll see how aggressive Brandon Beane and Joe Brady want to be in adding even more to that position group.

Regardless of what other additions are made, this offseason is absolutely critical for the Bills. In a year with no Patrick Mahomes standing in their way in the postseason, the Bills clearly felt like they left a golden opportunity on the table, and ownership was fed up with it. Sean McDermott was let go, and making a huge trade like this before the legal negotiating window for free agency even opens up is a signal that they're going to do whatever it takes to get better.

And the fan base should be expecting nothing less. The Bills will be in a championship window as long as Josh Allen is around, and a situation like we saw last year, where they had to bring in Brandin Cooks as an in-season addition at the position, is simply not acceptable for a team of this caliber.
