The Buffalo Bills are heading into their second preseason game where they will travel to Chicago to take on the Bears. Coming off a loss against the New York Giants, the Bills have some improvements to make, especially on defense. Giving up 34 points in the one and only home preseason game is not a great look. Luckily, Bills fans don’t have to worry about the wins and losses right now.
At the end of the day, the Bills just need to get out of the preseason as healthy as possible. One player that is dealing with a bit of a serious injury is wide receiver Khalil Shakir, who has a high-ankle sprain. The hope is that he can be ready for Week 1 for Sunday Night Football.
Even though the Bills dropped their first preseason game, there was one player who shined and now the organization has no choice but to find a way to get him a roster spot going into the regular season.
WR Tyrell Shavers deserves a final roster spot for Bills
Bills fans have seen Tyrell Shavers show some explosive plays throughout his time in Buffalo. Last year in Week 17 against the New York Jets, he took a simple dump off pass from Mitch Trubisky 69 yards for a score to put the Bills up big. Then this past game against the Giants, he had a 58-yard reception (from Trubisky again) near the end of the second half to set the Bills up for a field goal going into halftime.
Shavers ended the game against the Giants with just two catches but he did have 70 yards on the day. He’s an explosive playmaker but because the wide receiver room is so crowded, he faces an uphill battle. However, with Shakir’s injury and some inconsistent play from other receivers, he should be on the front office’s radar of making the final roster.
If Shavers continues to be a true deep-threat for the Bills for the remainder of this preseason, Sean McDermott and Brandon Beane must find a way to keep him because if they decide to release him, it would not be a surprise to see another team grab him for this coming season.
