The Buffalo Bills have made their first free agency move since the NFL Draft concluded just over two weeks ago. Buffalo has reportedly signed former Kansas City Chiefs outside linebacker Mike Danna to a one-year deal, giving the Bills more depth that Jim Leonhard can work with.
ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported last week that Danna had visited the Bills on a free agency visit, and now he will be wearing Bills blue coming over from the Chiefs. Danna has been with the Chiefs since 2020, being drafted there in the 5th round out of Michigan.
In six seasons with the Chiefs, Danna registered 21.5 sacks to go with 194 total tackles and 6 forced fumbles. Coming into Buffalo, Danna will now be part of a rotation under Jim Leonhard and rush the passer.
Signing of Mike Danna gives Bills more defensive depth
This offseason, the Bills have been focused on revamping the defense since it’s going from a Sean McDermott-like defense to now under the control of Leonhard, who is all about rushing the passer. The Bills went heavy on defense in free agency and the draft to give Leonhard a fighting chance for success. They have also made some changes, such as moving Greg Rousseau to outside linebacker instead of coming off the edge.
Danna is now part of the Bills’ free agency class that features guys like Bradley Chubb, C.J. Gardner-Johnson, Dee Alford, and Geno Stone.
When it comes to what kind of impact Danna could have with Buffalo, we may see him lining up at outside linebacker but then occasionally have his hands in the dirt. Buffalo has always had a heavy rotation of guys in the trenches and it shouldn't change too much, but only time will tell.
Signing Danna could be compared to signing someone like A.J. Epenesa, who still remains a free agent. However, Danna might be a better fit for Leonhard’s defense than Epenesa is. Plus, signing someone from a bitter rival like the Chiefs is always a great thing to see.Â
Danna will now get the chance to join a defense that has been a major liability for the past couple of seasons, and coaches will soon see what he will bring to Buffalo coming from a Kansas City defense that thrived under Steve Spagnuolo.
