The Buffalo Bills were given a huge gift on Thursday night as they saw the Chicago Bears take care of business at home against the New England Patriots. Sometimes the only thing better than watching your favorite team win, is seeing a bitter rival lose an important game.
Chicago took down New England, 30-24, as kicker Cairo Santos came up with a massive 58-yard field goal with 1:34 left in the 4th quarter to put the Bears up 30-21. While the Patriots did manage to respond with their own field goal to make it a 6 point game, they couldn't get a miracle at the end.
Patriots' Week 7 loss is a huge gain for Bills
Going into Thursday Night Football, the Patriots were sitting at 4-2 right behind the Bills in the AFC East standings. With them holding the tiebreaker over Buffalo from their Week 4 win, the Patriots could have closed the gap even more if they had beaten the Bears. While the Bills would have still been in first place, the Patriots and Bills would literally at the same spot going into Week 8.
With the Bears closing out with the win, the Patriots fall to 4-3 which gives the Bills some room going into Week 8 where they have a tough matchup against the Baltimore Ravens in Orchard Park.
That Week 4 loss to the Patriots did hurt the Bills because now up until Week 13, they are going to have to not just control their own destiny, but also hope that the Patriots slip up at some times to fall behind a little bit. The Bears helped the Bills with this win over New England, which gives Buffalo an extra reason to enjoy their bye week.
Bills get extra joy during bye week with Patriots' loss
After back-to-back hard fought wins against the Rams and Raiders in Weeks 5-6, the Bills got the chance to come back to the east coast and relax, as well as rest up for the rest of the seasons. With them dealing with key injuries to DJ Moore and Ed Oliver, the bye week gives the Bills a chance to get fully healthy and extra prep for a tough AFC showdown against the Ravens.
Now with the Bears beating the Patriots, they have another reason to enjoy this bye week as they get some extra room in the AFC East. Any advantage for the Bills works, whether it's direct or indirect. Plus, watching a division rival lose also make things sweeter in general.
