When the NFL Draft concluded a week ago today, teams started immediately signing undrafted free agents who got the chance to pick where they would go. One of the benefits of going undrafted is that players have a choice on where to go. Being drafted is obviously the goal, but once you get drafted by a team, that’s where your future could be for the next four years.
The Buffalo Bills started signing undrafted free agents and one of their signings was wide receiver Max Tomczak out of Youngstown State, per Ryan Talbot. He is related to former NFL quarterback Mike Tomczak, who played with the Chicago Bears, Green Bay Packers, Cleveland Browns, and Pittsburgh Steelers.
Being signed by the Bills, Max Tomczak is coming off a 2025 season at Youngstown State where he was a Second-Team All-American selection at wide receiver, finishing with 1,021 yards and 8 touchdowns off of 70 receptions. While the Bills upgraded their wide receiver room this offseason, adding someone like Tomczak could be beneficial for depth reasons.
Tomczak has talent and could very well earn a roster spot in the NFL. Heck, it might even be with the Bills. Kristopher Knox from Bleacher Report has even predicted that Tomczak is most likely to make the Bills roster
"The Youngstown State product signed as an UDFA following an impressive collegiate run that saw him finish second in program history with 3,024 career receiving yards. The nephew of former NFL quarterback Mike Tomczak, the rookie pass-catcher has plenty to offer Buffalo's receiver room." said Knox.
Max Tomczak projection to make Bills' final roster makes sense (but he has major competition)
I wouldn’t rule out the possibility of Tomczak making a roster for the season, whether it’s in Buffalo or not. However, to say that he is the most likely free agent to make the roster is a bit of a bold statement. If anything, that should belong to Wisconsin fullback Jackson Acker, who was actually Buffalo’s first UDFA signing after the draft.
Buffalo lost Reggie Gilliam in free agency and of all places, they lost him to the New England Patriots. Gilliam played a big time role in the rushing attack for James Cook that helped him become the best back in football last season. Now that he is with a division rival, the Bills need to find his replacement. Insert Acker into the conversation.
Wisconsin is notorious for running the ball and they need blockers to open up holes. Signing Acker gives the Bills a potentially great replacement for Gilliam to make the rushing attack does not take a big hit.
Maybe there is a world where both Acker and Tomczak end up making the final roster in Buffalo, but Acker is the more safe pick considering what the Bills need on offense.
