The Monday Night Football matchup between the Buffalo Bills and the New York Jets seemed to have taken forever in the second half to finish. Part of the reason why is because of the amount of flags that the referees were throwing on both teams. Between both the Bills and Jets, there were 22 accepted penalties for 204 yards.

Think about that. There were enough accepted penalties in this game to cover two football fields. If that isn’t ridiculous, I don’t know what is. It just looked like everytime a play would come to an end, fans were waiting for that yellow box that read “Flag” at the bottom of the screen. At one point, it was shocking to not see a flag thrown.

Nonetheless, everything was being called. However, it seemed like there were times when all calls were going against the Bills, and then all calls were going against the Jets. The NFL officiating has been questionable at best this year and this game does not help their case.

There was one penalty on Bills’ defensive end A.J. Epenesa that made Bills fans very upset. After racking up one sack already, Epenesa managed to get to Aaron Rodgers again and bring him down for a sack. However, that sack would turn into a penalty because the referees believed it was roughing the passer.

There was a lot of push back on that call as it was nowhere near roughing the passer. Even former All-Pro defensive end J.J. Watt got in on the controversial call.

It wasn’t just Bills fans that were angry about this call either. Aaron Rodgers himself even said that the sack was not a penalty, per Ari Meirov.

The NFL officiating crew is making the game harder than it needs to be

For the longest time now, the referees in the NFL have been getting a lot of bad publicity about their awful calls that have screwed over so many teams. It has cost teams momentum, wins, and sometimes even championships. For many seasons now, fans and players have been calling for the officiating to improve but it seems like nothing is changing as of now.

Even though the Bills were heavily affected by the refs in this game, they still managed to come out on top against the Jets.
