We are less than 24 hours from kickoff at Huntington Bank Field where the Buffalo Bills will be on the road to take on the Cleveland Browns. The Bills will be looking to move to 2-0 after picking up their first win of the preseason last Saturday against the Carolina Panthers. The Bills flat out dominated that game, and now Bills Mafia will be able to see if that’s the standard or if it was just luck.
There was plenty of great key moments from that game, but there are also some things to clean up. It will be the first game away from the new Highmark Stadium, but atleast the Bills didn't have to travel far for this game.
Lots of players shined against the Panthers last week, but there are some that have some added pressure to be successful against the Browns. There are five players that fans should be paying close attention to during Saturday's game.
5 Bills who have lots to prove in preseason game against Browns
WR Trent Sherfield
The wide receiver room for the Buffalo Bills consistent of some guys who are locks, some who are fighting for a starting spot, and some who might just be competing for roster spot. When it comes to Trent Sherfield, you could make the argument that he is competing for a roster spot.
In Buffalo’s first preseason game, Sherfield had just two catches for 12 yards. He won’t ever be a starter for the Bills, but he can be a depth guy who also plays on special teams. However, with other receivers like Mecole Hardman Jr. and Dante Pettis in the mix, this puts pressure on Sherfield to stand out and prove that he is worth a roster spot.
FB Ben VanSumeren
Earlier this week, the Bills had signed back linebacker Otis Reese IV and to make room for him, they released undrafted rookie fullback Jackson Acker. That now leaves Ben VanSumeren as the lone fullback on the roster. While anything can happen from now until Week 1, VanSumeren has the clear path to make the final 53-man roster as the team's starting fullback. It's time to prove it again in Week 2 against the Browns.
DT Greg Gaines
Another move that the Bills made this week was signing veteran defensive tackle Greg Gaines, who has spent his career with the Los Angeles Rams and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. With this game set to be his first one with the Bills, this is a great opportunity for him to shine and impress Bills Mafia right away.
LB Kaleb Elarms-Orr
In his first live game with the Bills, Kaleb Elarms-Orr was solid as he was flying around the field. Throughout the summer, Elarms-Orr has been very solid and has caught the attention of his teammates and his coaches for the right reasons. Going up against a more physical Cleveland team, he should be tested to see how he responds. If he thrives, he should be in the lead for a starting role come Week 1.
K Tyler Bass
Tyler Bass wasn’t bad against the Panthers, going 3-for-4 on field goal tries but he did miss a 45-yard kick at one point. Then in Thursday’s joint practice with the Browns, Bass went 4-for-6 where he missed from 35 yards and 45 yards out to the right, per Jay Skurski of The Buffalo News.
Bass missed all of last season with a pelvic injury, and now he will need to earn the trust back of Bills Mafia. For now though, he is in the lead to having the starting job as there is no other serious competition for him on the roster.
