With the Buffalo Bills scoring a major Week 1 victory, with a score of 36-31 over the Houston Texans this past Sunday, the team has little time to celebrate as it prepares for its first home game at the new Highmark Stadium. The Bills will be facing the Detroit Lions on Thursday Night Football.
Both teams will be marching towards their second win of the season and will be dealing with three major battles they must win in order to come out of this game 2-0.
3 faceoffs Bills must conquer vs. Lions in home opener
1.) Buffalo's offensive line vs. Aidan Hutchinson
The Buffalo Bills offensive line in Week 1 did a fabulous job of protecting star quarterback Josh Allen while at the same time keeping Will Anderson Jr. in check and shutting down Danielle Hunter until the third quarter. This week, the trenches will be tested again as they face Lions star pass rusher Aidan Hutchinson on Thursday night.
Since he was drafted No. 2 overall in 2022, Hutchinson has developed into one of the game's most feared pass rushers, especially when it comes to taking down opposing quarterbacks.
The 6-foot-7, 268-pound athlete is a bona fide edge rusher who uses his size and power to make an impact when sacking quarterbacks. He's also strong enough to be able to stop the run at the first level and force offenses into second- or third-and -long situations.
If the Bills can find a way to neutralize him by running wide receiver screens and throwing deep passes to D.J. Moore to draw more 15-yard pass interference penalties, then look for the Bills offense to once again score at least 30 points on Hutchinson and the Lions defense in all.
2.) Buffalo's run-defense vs. Jahmyr Gibbs
While the Bills defense as a whole surrendered 31 points to a solid Houston Texans offense, the Bills run-defense actually played better than the number of points the unit gave up.
The Bills gave up 124 rushing yards, but on a massive 32 carries, only allowing 3.9 yards per carry. Despite David Montgomery scoring two rushing touchdowns, the run-defense as a whole was fundamentally sound by not giving up too many explosive runs. And the tackling was already better one game into this season than during most of 2025.
But this week, the run defense will be tested by a bigger-name NFL running back in the Lions' Jahmyr Gibbs. Since being drafted in the first round in 2023, the 5-foot-9, 202-pound back has showcased a hard-hitting running style and the speed to get open in space and take it to the house for touchdowns.
If the Bills can find a way to keep him from getting open in space and force him to run in between the tackles for limited yards, then the Bills should walk out of this game with their third straight 2-0 start to the season.
3.) Buffalo's secondary vs. Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams
Both men are tall, lengthy wide receivers with the toughness, discipline, and speed to make the big, tough catches on deep passes. At 6-foot, 202 pounds and 6-foot-1, 184 pounds, respectively, they are both talented and are each other's Batman and Robin: they both have each other's backs and really don't care who puts up better individual stats.
The Bills' defense, led by Jim Leonhard, will be playing more man coverage, similar to what former Buffalo Bills linebacker and current Lions defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard will do.
That means Christian Benford, Maxwell Hairston, and even Davison Igbinosun will have to do their best to prevent them from catching the ball without getting too grabby with their hands, as we saw during the Houston Texans game last Sunday.
With Buffalo's offensive line driving their team in Week 2, and Detroit's wide receiving core showing off their talents in Week 1, this game will be a fun one to watch come Thursday night in Highmark Stadium.
