The 2026 Buffalo Bills schedule is now out and it looks like a major undertaking as the team begins a new chapter. Breaking in a new head coach and defensive scheme would be challenging under normal circumstances. Facing the litany of top-tier teams the Bills are facing, it is downright scary.
That said, the Bills have a chance to set themselves up for success. There are three scenarios, in particular, that should have Bills fans feeling good as they run the schedule gauntlet this season.
3 best case scenarios for the Buffalo Bills in 2026
3.) Final seven weeks leave Bills battle-tested
The Bills have a few easy opponents but there are a pair of stretches that will really test them. Beginning with the Week 12 matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs, the Bills have four consecutive games - two at home, two on the road - that will test them greatly.
If they can come out of the five-week stretch against the Chiefs, New England Patriots, Green Bay Packers, Chicago Bears, and Denver Broncos with a positive record, it will set them up for two easy games to finish the season (at the Miami Dolphins, home for the New York Jets). That will give them a chance to gather themselves while being as battle-tested as possible for the playoffs.
2.) Bills enter the bye having weathered early season gauntlet
The Bills also face a brutal five-game stretch to begin the season, and it could set the tone for the entire slate. The Bills open with road games against the Houston Texans and Los Angeles Rams, and a three-game homestand against the Detroit Lions, Los Angeles Chargers, and New England Patriots.
If they enter Week 6’s road game against the Las Vegas Raiders with a record of 3-2 or better, it should set them up nicely to enter the bye in Week 7 with some positive momentum. Facing that back-half slate, they are going to need it.
1.) Post-bye run could set the table for the playoffs
Coming out of the bye week is when the Bills can potentially help themselves the most. They have an always tough home game with the Baltimore Ravens, but three manageable games against the Minnesota Vikings, Jets, and Dolphins to follow before the Chiefs game.
The Bills can and should go at least 3-1 in that stretch. If they are 3-3 or 4-2 going into the bye, that means being 6-4 or 7-3 going into the toughest part of the schedule where they could begin to separate themselves.
Tough sledding ahead
The Bills are going to face some of the best players and teams in the league. For any team, it would look like a daunting task. Even a moderately improved run defense should help them weather the storm. It also helps that they have one of the premier running offenses in the NFL. Oh, and Josh Allen doesn’t hurt, either.
The Bills will have to be sharp to weather the schedule storm this season. If they can come out of it with a playoff-worthy record - and even an AFC East title - they will have to be on the shortlist of contenders going into the postseason.
