Buffalo Bills Mock Draft: A trade up for the Odell Beckham backup plan
By Ryan Heckman
During the early portion of the free agency period, the Bills didn’t make a ton of outside signings. But, one of the more notable ones was bringing in backup quarterback Kyle Allen. The backup quarterback position was well-taken care of recently, with the likes of Case Keenum backing up Josh Allen.
With Kyle Allen, now, that spot takes a step back. It would be in Buffalo’s best interest to try and draft and develop a stout backup quarterback. And, with the value here in the sixth round, it’s hard to argue against drafting Georgia’s Stetson Bennett.
A Heisman finalist and one of the more impressive players in the country last year, Bennett obviously benefited from an ultra-talented core of players around him, on both sides of the ball. Still, Bennett has some traits to love, as a backup at the very least.
A bit undersized at 5-foot-11, Bennett is more of a pocket passer and can read the field well. He goes through progressions like you want to see, which isn’t always something rookies can say they do regularly. Bennett also has some sneaky quickness to him, running a 4.67 at the Combine and showing the ability to take off when need be.
As a backup, Bennett’s leadership and experience will allow him to develop quicker than most. He will benefit greatly from learning next to Allen, too.
