Buffalo Bills: Josh Allen among QBs Cam Newton would back up
The Buffalo Bills appear set at quarterback for the upcoming season with Josh Allen, Matt Barkley, and the addition of Kyle Allen in free agency. However, if they consider a change at some point this offseason, Cam Newton is a quarterback that might be an option.
The former first overall pick made headlines when he said that there weren’t 32 quarterbacks better than him. He believes he can still play in the NFL and even threw at Auburn’s Pro Day to show what he can do.
Recently, Newton clarified his point that he believes there aren’t 32 quarterbacks better than him but he would be willing to accept a backup role. He listed 11 quarterbacks and that list included Buffalo Bills’ quarterback Josh Allen.
Should Buffalo Bills consider Cam Newton as a backup for Josh Allen?
At one time Cam Newton was one of the top quarterbacks in the NFL but recently has struggled to play at a starter level. In 2021, Cam Newton would lose a training camp battle with Mac Jones and the Patriots would release him prior to the season.
Newton returned to the Carolina Panthers midway through the 2021 season and appeared in eight games and started five. However, he threw only four touchdowns and five interceptions during that stretch and didn’t play at all this past season.
Cam Newton will be turning 34 years old this year and opportunities are likely to be very limited from this point forward. However, the Buffalo Bills have plenty of connections to Cam Newton that could at least warrant a discussion.
Both head coach Sean McDermott and general manager Brandon Beane know Cam Newton well from their time with the Carolina Panthers. However, offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey may know him the best as he was his QB coach from 2013 to 2017, which included Newton’s MVP season in 2015.
At this point it would seem unlikely that the Buffalo Bills make a move but if there is an injury at the position, then Cam Newton could be an option to add to the quarterback room alongside Josh Allen.
