Buffalo Bills Mock Draft: A trade for Derrick Henry creates madness
By Ryan Heckman
The Bills are fortunate to have one of the league’s best, young, up-and-coming tight ends in Dawson Knox. But, behind him, they could use another option. Many teams have found success running multiple tight end sets, especially if both those players can act as threats in the passing game.
That’s why, in the fifth round, Buffalo goes with Michigan tight end Luke Schoonmaker. At 6-foot-5 and 251 pounds, Schoonmaker possesses prototypical size for the position. But, he also has the speed, quickness and athleticism teams look for in a receiving tight end.
Bills fans will be happy to know that his comparison, via NFL’s Lance Zierlein, is in fact Dawson Knox. Not that the Bills absolutely must have identical talents at tight end, but I have a hard time believing anyone would complain adding another similar player.
Schoonmaker gets in and out of his breaks better than most in his class, and uses his quick feet to get himself open, sinking down in the soft spots of zone defenses.
Last year with the Wolverines, Schoonmaker caught 35 passes for 418 yards and three scores. While his numbers don’t scream “alpha” tight end, many collegiate tight ends don’t post gaudy numbers. With the right opportunity in Buffalo, he could be a welcomed addition, especially learning right behind Knox.
