The final team is the San Francisco 49ers, who had arguably the best defense in the NFL last season but could use an upgrade at safety with Taushan Gipson set to be a free agent. The 49ers defense will likely have some changes for the upcoming season as last year’s defensive coordinator, DeMeco Ryan was named the head coach of the Houston Texans.

The 49ers replaced him with Steve Wilks, who most recently was the interim head coach for the Carolina Panthers. The reason this is notable is that earlier in his career Wilks was a part of Ron Rivera’s staff when he was head coach of the Carolina Panthers. He was the defensive backs coach during that time and would be named defensive coordinator in 2017 and replaced Sean McDermott, who became head coach of the Buffalo Bills.

Wilks runs a similar scheme to what McDermott runs so adding a veteran like Jordan Poyer could be a great fit as he should have some familiarity with the defensive scheme. The addition of Poyer next to a younger player like Talanoa Hufanga could solidify the position and give Wilks a good safety duo to build his secondary around.
