Rookie of the Year: Kaiir Elam

At the beginning of the season, it didn’t seem like Kaiir Elam was going to be in a position to earn this award. However, he has gotten better and better almost on a weekly basis over the course of the season.

Elam began the season behind Christian Benford on the depth chart but was rotating in during the course of the game. However, he has started every game since Week 3, due in part to injuries but also due to the fact that he has improved.

In the first eight games, Elam has 34 total tackles, three passes defended, and two interceptions. The second interception, which came against the Kansas City Chiefs, was pivotal as it occurred in the end zone and ensured the Chiefs wouldn’t be able to add any points. It was a big momentum shift for Buffalo in the early part of that game.

The question now for Buffalo will be who will be the starter once Tre’Davious White returns, which could be as early as Week 10. It will be a tough decision because Elam has certainly done enough to this point to be that starter.
