The Buffalo Bills announced their inactives ahead of their Week 5 matchup with the Pittsburgh Steelers and unfortunately linebacker Tremaine Edmunds was among the players who will miss today’s game.
The team’s starting linebacker has been dealing with a hamstring injury this week and was unable to participate in practice. It seemed optimistic that Edmunds was listed as questionable but it seems like the team wants to take a cautious approach and will not have him on the field today.
The hope is that Edmunds could return next week against the Kansas City Chiefs.
Edmunds joins safety Jordan Poyer, tight end Dawson Knox, wide receiver Jake Kumerow and cornerback Christian Benford among the inactives. Those four players were ruled out on Friday and the team has known for a few days that they wouldn’t be available.
One player who is not among the inactives is wide receiver Jamison Crowder. The veteran suffered a broken ankle last week against the Baltimore Ravens and was ruled out on Friday but moved to injured reserve on Saturday.
The absence of Crowder, along with Isaiah McKenzie being inactive, means that Khalil Shakir is in line to have a much bigger role this week against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
In addition to Shakir, the Buffalo Bills also signed wide receiver Isaiah Hodgins from their practice squad. He will be active for his first game this season and only his second regular season game in his career. The last game he was active in was against the New England Patriots in Week 15 last season.
The good news for the Buffalo Bills is that both defensive tackles Ed Oliver and Jordan Phillips are active today. Oliver has been out since suffering an ankle injury in Week 1 and Phillips has been out since Week 2 with a hamstring injury.
Both of these players returning will be a big boost for the interior of the defensive line as the defense hopes to generate pressure up the middle of the field.
