For most of the summer, the Buffalo Bills’ 53-man roster looked to be set and in general, the initial roster was what was expected. However, there were a few surprises among the players that were cut and these were the three biggest among the final round of cuts.

If looking at the performance on the field, the release of O.J. Howard wasn’t overly surprising. Since the Buffalo Bills signed him as a free agent in March, Howard didn’t show much in practice or the preseason.

In three preseason games, Howard would have three receptions for 16 yards and a touchdown on four targets. It was clear by the end of the preseason, that Quintin Morris had performed slightly better than the former first round pick.

However, even with Morris looking slightly better it didn’t appear to be enough for the team to release the veteran due to the salary cap ramifications. The Bills signed Howard to a fully-guaranteed contract so the fact that they released him resulted in over $2.6 million in dead cap this year.

When considering the salary cap side of the move, it seemed like the Buffalo Bills would keep him on the roster and hope that maybe he would improve as the season went along. However, they elected to go with Tommy Sweeney and Quintin Morris and the release of Howard was one of the team’s more surprising moves.
