Terrel Bernard listed as the backup middle linebacker

When the Buffalo Bills drafted Terrel Bernard, he seemed to be the perfect player to backup Matt Milano. He has a similar skill set to Milano in terms of being a smaller linebacker but one that is athletic and has the ability to be a plus player in pass coverage.

While that seems to be true based on training camp, he also appears to have the added responsibility of being the backup to Tremaine Edmunds as middle linebacker. On Wednesday, Leslie Frazier said that Bernard has “shown versatility and can back up both roles” according to Thad Brown.

The biggest question for Terrel Bernard would be how he handles moving through traffic in the middle of the field and whether can he disengage from blockers to make the tackle. He doesn’t have the size that Edmunds does but would be able to match what the two-time Pro Bowl linebacker brings in pass coverage.

Since Bernard can seemingly back up both roles, it will be interesting to see if the coaching staff gives him snaps during the preseason both as an outside linebacker but also inside at middle linebacker.
