Can James Cook push Devin Singletary for early down work?
The Bills were looking for pass-catching juice out of the backfield this offseason. They pursued veteran scatback J.D. McKissic, and when that went awry, they traded back twice in the second round before selecting Georgia running back James Cook.
Splitting time with Zamir White at Georgia, Cook didn’t see a lot of volume but established himself as a top receiving back in the draft. On top of his ability to beat linebackers out of the backfield, Cook can split out wide and beat defensive backs down the field.
It is expected that Cook will take over the third-down role, and Devin Singletary will keep the early down work after his strong end to the season. But, early reports out of camp are raving about Cook. The younger brother of Dalvin Cook, it’s hard not to see the similarities when James gets the ball in his hands. Even Stefon Diggs has seen it early in camp after he played with Dalvin at Minnesota and now James here in Buffalo.
If Cook can continue to look as good as he has to start camp, he will find himself at the top of the depth chart in no time.
