The nickel corner is typically not viewed as the starter because teams have typically used the nickel formation as their sub-package. However, that is not the case with the Buffalo Bills as the nickel is their primary formation and Taron Johnson is essentially a starter with one of the best defenses in the league.

After an up and down start to his career, the past year and a half Johnson has played excellent football. He has had three interceptions over the past two years, including two defensive touchdowns, and quarterbacks completed only 55% of passes thrown in his direction. This percentage is down from 67% in each of the past two seasons.

As the nickel corner, he not only is asked to cover some of the quicker players on the field but playing inside he is also expected to contribute against the run. He has had 170 total tackles over the past two years and has ranked in the Top 5 on the team in that category each year.

Taron Johnson is expected to do a lot for this defense and his contributions are often overlooked with some of the players around him. However, he is a player that has typically come up with a big play when the defense needs it most.
