Christian Benford

The Buffalo Bills drafted another cornerback later in the 2022 NFL Draft when they selected Christian Benford out of Villanova in the sixth round. While Elam is competing for the starting job, Benford will be fighting for a spot on the 53-man roster.

Benford had a productive career at Villanova with 14 interceptions, 47 passes defended, and 137 total tackles in 36 games.

While he played well at Villanova, the shift to the NFL appears to be tougher early in his career. According to Matt Parrino with newyorkupstate.com, Benford struggled during the final open practices of OTAs in June. Parrino noted that he was beaten in one-on-one drills by Tanner Gentry and Isaiah McKenzie.

The positive though is Parrino did write that he continued to battle throughout practice and this will be key for him during training camp.

There is a battle at the back of the depth chart for the final spot at cornerback between Benford, Cam Lewis, Olaijah Griffin, and Nick McCloud. The rookie from Villanova will really need to play well to win that final spot.
