New England Patriots: Hunter Henry

Bill Belichick made a few dubious signings during 2021’s free agency period. Most notably, the long-tenured Patriots head coach signed not one, but TWO free-agent tight ends – Jonnu Smith and Hunter Henry. No other NFL team has more money tied to their tight ends than New England.

It’s safe to say that Henry’s production doesn’t exactly match his three-year, $37 million contract. While he did have nine touchdowns in 2021, he scored four of them in two games. His receiving yard total left a lot to be desired, as he only accumulated 603 yards – the 13th most out of any tight end. That number is pretty underwhelming for a guy who has the sixth-highest average salary at his position.

One can make a justifiable argument that Smith is just as overrated, with a similar contract to Henry’s and lackadaisical production (less than 300 yards and only one touchdown). It could be attested that Smith is the team’s worst investment, while Henry is the most overrated Patriot – and his injury doesn’t help matters as much.
