Contract: 3 years, $5.475 million
Going from arguably the best free agent signing the Buffalo Bills made last season in Efe Obada to the worst in Matt Haack. The Bills last year elected to make a switch at the punter position by not bringing back Corey Bojorquez and instead elected to sign former Miami Dolphins punter Matt Haack.
During his NFL career, Haack is not a punter who can punt it deep but has shown an ability to pin opponents deep inside their 20. This in theory would have been a perfect fit for the Buffalo Bills and their offense as they typically were getting at least one or two first downs each drive.
However, it didn’t work out that way and Haack would finish the year with one of the lowest average yards per punt in the league but also struggle to keep it out of the end zone. He had seven touchbacks and a touchback rate of 13.46%.
The area where he made the biggest impact last year was as a holder on field goal attempts for Tyler Bass. General manager Brandon Beane described him as an elite holder and that certainly helps this grade some.
While Matt Haack remains on the team, he appears to have an uphill battle to be on the final 53-man roster for this upcoming season. The team renegotiated his contract this offseason as well as drafted Matt Araiza in the 2022 NFL Draft. It would be rather surprising if Haack were to win the job over Araiza this summer even with his ability on field goal attempts.
