Dawson Knox not letting contract negotiations with Buffalo Bills distract him

While Jordan Poyer has made it clear that he is looking for a new contract with the Buffalo Bills, tight end Dawson Knox seems to be taking a different approach.

Knox is entering the final year of his rookie contract after the Bills drafted him in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft. He is coming off the best year of his career, even after missing two games due to a broken hand suffered during the season.

It certainly would make sense that general manager Brandon Beane and the team would at least have some conversations with Knox about a new deal based on how he played last year.

However, the starting tight end isn’t the only player who could be getting a contract extension as the previously mentioned Poyer, along with Devin Singletary and Tremaine Edmunds are entering the final year of their current deals and it is up to Beane to prioritize which deals must get done.

Buffalo Bills starting tight end trying to keep his focus on the field

After the second minicamp practice, Dawson Knox met with the media and was asked about his contract. The starting tight end didn’t provide much insight other than the fact that he is trying to keep his focus on the field.

"“I mean I don’t think it’s any different than any other year. You start thinking too much about stuff like that it’s gonna distract you from how you play on the field.”"

There is no question that Dawson Knox is a great fit for this offense and this past season he significantly improved a glaring weakness in his game as he cut down on drops. He has clearly gained the trust of Josh Allen and that shouldn’t change this season.

The biggest question is whether or not the two sides can agree on a new contract. This might have become tougher recently after the deal that David Njoku got from the Cleveland Browns. It was certainly surprising based on what Njoku has done to this point and Dawson Knox and his representations could look to this deal as a starting point.

Now with minicamp over, this is typically the time teams try to work on contract extensions for their players. It will be interesting to see if the two sides agree to a new deal over the next few months.
